James Fisher Collection, 1854-1948.

Collection, 1854-1948, of Dr. James Fisher, Jr., a professor at Michigan College of Mining and Technology (now Michigan Technological University) in Houghton, Michigan. Includes a grade book from Dr. Fisher's early teaching career, correspondence sent and received, minutes, articles, dinner programs, Michigan College of Mining and Technology publications, a handwritten manuscript on stamp mills, and clippings. Also includes medals, a camera that uses either glass plates or roll film, an early movie projector, and other photographic equipment.

Dr. James Fisher, Jr. was born in Hancock, Michigan in 1873. He graduated in 1893 from the Michigan Mining School and worked as a time at Hodge Iron Works in Ripley, Michigan. He returned to the school in 1895 as an instructor in math and physics, eventually becoming the department head as well as the Director of Adult Education in 1945 and Dean of Faculty from 1936-1946. In 1901 Michigan Mining School (now Michigan Technological University) in Houghton, Michigan received funding for two additional buildings. The Civil and Mining Engineering Building, was built at a cost of $28,880, was a two-story hip-roofed structure with a five-story tower centered on the front.
